Edwin Bakker is professor of (counter) terrorism studies of the Institute of Public Administration of Leiden University where he teaches courses on terrorism and crisis communication. He heads the Centre of Terrorism (CTC) and Counterterrorism and is fellow of the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT), both based in The Hague, the Netherlands.
Edwin has a research interest in violent radicalization, jihadi terrorism and unconventional forms of terrorism, including lone operators and the potential threat of CBRN terrorism. Regarding counter-terrorism, his main interests include communication and impact management in relation to the threat of terrorism. As the coordinator of the Master “Crisis and Security Management” of Leiden University, Edwin promotes the use of serious gaming as an essential part of the curriculum. One such simulation game aims to give insight into the hectic and politically sensitive decision making after a credible bomb threat against key commercial and symbolic targets in the Netherlands.
